The “Original Gangster” is a circuit developed by Tim Thompson mostly in early 2012, after winning “Best in Show” at Mojotone’s 2011 Southeastern Guitar and Amp Show by a landslide. The concept of a simple circuit using an octal pentode pre-amp tube to enhance musical fundamentals was then incorporated into a single-ended circuit topography that relied on intermodulation distortion to enhance harmonics and tonal complexity. These ideas create a ghost-note, or sense of built-in reverb, giving the player a rich tonal palette for their instrument to live in. This circuit was modified in 2023 to include an input attenuator that can help with how much your pedals or outboard gear may “smash” the front-end. Additionally, a control was included to affect exactly how much the first preamp stage compresses the audio signal. The simple, four-control, interface provides a wide range of capabilities. The player can experience anything from warm yet sparkling and shimmering cleans to all out saturated, tonal rage.

– Rectifier Switch (rear panel)
– Preamp stage – Pentode Octal flexible for 6SJ7 and 6SK7 variants. Metal or glass configurations are acceptable. Application Specifications Controls Tube compliment
– Driver stage – Dual Triode Octal flexible for 6SN7, 6SL7, or equivalent/variant. NOTE: it is important to ensure that heater current for your desired tube does not exceed 750mA in this position.
– Output stage – Beam Tetrode Octal flexible for EL34 or 6L6GC.
– Rectifier Tube – 5Y3GT or 5U4GB NOTE: POWER DOWN COMPLETELY before changing any vacuum tubes. Output and rectifier tubes present a burning and electrical shock hazard. Use appropriate handling methods and caution when changing power or rectifier tubes, especially if the amp has been on and running for any given amount of time. Failure to comply with this note may result in personal injury and/or damage to equipment.

Not sure what kind of magic Tim is working over at Audio Eyra, but I just received my OG and this is the most expressive and musical amp I have ever played or owned. The notes just fly out of the speakers. It is incredibly versatile and simple amp. Working with Tim was a pleasure. I can’t wait to hear what else you come up with.
